The New York Times reports that Iran has informed the United Nation's nuclear watchdog (the International Atomic Energy Agency), on Thursday that it would not accept a plan which its negotiators agreed to last week to send it's stockpile of uranium out of the country. To paraphrase European and American officials briefed on Iran's response: the central feature of a draft agreement reached on Oct. 21 in Vienna which required Iran to send three-quarters of its admitted-to stockpiles of low-enriched uranium to Russia for processing, then returned to Iran for use in a nuclear reactor at a facility in Tehran used for making "medical" isotopes, was rejected. One official stated that the Iranian response was “basically a refusal” to go along with that provision, “the key issue [being] that Iran does not agree to export its lightly enriched uranium." He went on to say “That’s not a minor detail. That’s the whole point of the deal.”
This present debacle with Iran demonstrates the utter naïveté and incompetence of the Obama administration's foreign policy. As if that were the only area of incompetence we have to worry about. To make this non-deal Obama gave-in to the Russians by ordering the removal of our missile defense program from eastern Europe, in the hope Russia would reciprocate by agreeing to stiff sanctions against Iran should it refuse to go along with the IAEA plan -- he failed on all fronts. He, as if a character from one of the Star Trek - Next Generation episodes, agreed to meet and negotiate with Iran absent any preconditions -- he blundered; He's forsaken Israel, the only true democratic government and our best ally in the region; He's allowing Afghanistan to lapse into a civil war that will surely result in additional U.S. casualties as well as renewed Taliban/Al Qaeda threats to Pakistan; moreover, he's all but assured Israel will attack Iran's nuclear facilities sooner than later, an act that will drive world oil prices and our homeland terror alerts through the roof, that will further damage our economy and risk a wider protracted middle east conflict as Iran seeks ala's retribution against Israel (not to forget against U.S. interests both abroad and at home). In short, we haven't faced such nuclear peril since the height of the cold war. But at least then the nuclear threat was kept in check by that crazy sounding policy known as Mutually Assured Destruction. Iran and the terrorists they employ have no such moderator. They welcome their eventual annihilation and expect to die for their god; they believe they exist to destroy the great Satan and it's ally -- Israel; and as reward for their sacrifice in jihad, at the end of their REIGN-bow of terror, they expect to find 72 virgins and a pot of gold. Hey Obama -- messiah to the world -- is that great or what?
Americans made a big mistake voting on pure emotion for a virtual unknown, a very clean articulated black man with no fingerprints, with no permanent record, who casts no shadow -- lacking the substance by which one might see himself in the mirror of introspection; A man who maintains the most dubious of political associations.
Credit must, however, be given where due. Since January 2009 Barack Obama has accomplished something heretofore thought nigh unto impossible. . . he's made the likes of Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and John Kerry appear as reasoned and seasoned statesmen, well you know, when compared to himself. If you weren't worried about our immediate future before, now might be a good time to start. My some day to be sainted mother would say: calm down, it's not as bad as all that, things could always be worse -- then she'd break into song and lyric: Ka Sara Sara. . . Don't get me wrong, I love my mom, but is it any wonder why I prefer ranting and raving to "civility"? Seems to me well meaning people telling us to "be calm", that "things aren't so bad, they could always be worse ya know", and that "everything's gonna be alright. . ." is what got us here.
